Weight Loss Challenge - Class 3 Highlights: Nutrition Labels

The 3rd Weight Loss War Nutrition class really opened some eyes, especially about nutrition labels. We discussed how manufactures will try make their products look healthy when they are really not and how nutrition labels can be misleading.

Many people assume a small package or medium sized beverage container is a single serving, many times this is not the case. An official serving size of a beverage is 8 ozs, many bottles are 16 ozs or even 20 ozs. This means you may be drinking 2 - 2.5x the amount of calories listed on the label. Most of those calories are pure sugar!

Here are the highlights from Class #3:

  1. Went over how to read a nutrition label careful and look for hidden information.
  2. Learned what a "Good" fat is compared to a "Bad" fat.
  3. Our diets are way too low in Omega 3 fats (found in fish, flax seeds, borage oil and seaweed) which decrease inflammations in the body that are believed to cause heart disease and cause possible cancers.
  4. Learned why it is important to regulate your blood sugar.
  5. Be wise to portion size by decreasing your portions and eating small frequent meals.
Homework: Print of weeks 6 & 8 and read it. Read food labels to know what is in the foods you are consuming and get more Omega 3 into your diet.

20 Volunteers Needed For A Fitness Study

Twenty volunteers needed for a fitness study starting Monday March 3, 2009.

You will work with me or Kelsie in a fitness study for a 2-week period.

You:
- Must be able to exercise at 11 AM, 11:30 AM, 3 PM or 3:30 PM
- Must be able to workout Monday, Wednesday and Friday for 30 minutes
- Must be in reasonably good health except for being overweight (no movement problems or in severe pain)
- Willing to work hard and lose weight without magic potions or pills!

Precision Fitness will be testing the effectiveness of interval strength training compared to regular cardio exercise for weight loss.

Interval strength training is resistance training done in short bursts with short rest periods to elicit a cardiovascular effect while getting all the benefits of strength training.

You will be put into small groups and trained for two weeks by me, Todd Cambio, a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) or Kelsie Bryer, ASCM Certified Personal Trainer.

You will learn proper warm up techniques, stretching, strength training exercises, core exercises and nutrition strategies. If interested call 401-489-0551 or e-mail us at info@GoPrecisionFitness.com
