P90X Exercise Program is an Accident Waiting to Happen!

P90X is the "most extreme home fitness training system ever" is true! It is so extreme you will probably get injured in 90 days before you get ripped.

The workouts are great for someone who is already in great shape and has tons of time to get "ripped", but what about the rest of us normal people who can barely squeak in the recommended 30 minutes per day of exercise?

What can we do? Buy the P90X and try it for a few weeks until we are so sore we can't move? Just because you are watching it on a video doesn't mean your form is correct. You could actually be setting yourself up for a future injury. The progressions from easy to difficult exercises are way to fast, again leading to a higher risk of injury.

Then you realize it takes up way more time than we have to give. So, what do we do?

We put it on the shelf and claim we will get to it once we get our self in shape to actually do P90X. Another classic case of a "fitness dust collector" item.

I am not saying the workouts are bad, they are actually quite well thought out. The problem is that they are thought out for the fitness fanatic who wants 6 pack abs. Not for the 30 year old mother of two who wants to get her pre-kids figure back and have more energy. Its not for the 40 year old father who realizes he is 30 pounds overweight with high blood pressure and high cholesterol.

These people, and many of us, just want to get healthy. We want to be able to play pick up basketball again without feeling like your lungs are made of iron. We want to be able to run a 5K without having to walk every 2 feet. How about just making it up a flight of stairs without feeling like you are going to collapse?

These are all very real scenarios I hear people talk about on a daily basis. P90X also doesn't give you a plan for a healthy lifestyle change. It is just a short term facade. All it does is set you up to buy their back end products (like the pull up bar and supplements for their nutrition plan) or the next Info product.

The bottom line is that P90X is an exercise program that was made to make money not instil you with a long term healthy lifestyle change. Invest in yourself and not some fad workout program.

For me and my wife the problem with traditional workout programs and gym memberships is the time factor. Driving to a gym, waiting for equipment/ machines, driving home, etc. With 4 kids at home there is just no time for that. We love P90X because we can do it at home, our kids join in with us and the variety keeps us interested. My wife didn't want a 6-pack, just her pre-baby body back. And after 2 rounds of P90X she has it.

P90X has led us to a health lifestyle. With the nutritional guide that they provide Beachbody makes it so simple.

I've been logging some of my progress at www.myhealthyfitlife.com. Check it out.

I'm going to have to disagree with a lot of what was written. Nothing about P90X is short term. I am mixing it in some 2 years later still. There are thousands of stories of 40 and 50 year old mom's and over weight dads who got great results with it. Yes, Beachbody is in business to make money with future workouts and nutrition products but don't you do that too?

Brad and Mark, I respect the fact that you both have worked hard and gotten results with p90X, but you both work for Beachbody. Your both coaches, you should be getting results from it. Its how you bring in income.

I am talking about the average Joe or Jane who needs coaching in person and not through a video.

I wish you both continued success,

Todd

p90x is a short term answer and not a long term solution.

"Real people" who either don't exercise or cannot stick with exercise for longer that six months are not suited for this program.

The real question to consider is what happens when a "real person" slows down or stops the p90x program which is real life human behavior? The answer lies in pictures of the world's greatest body builder of all time - Arnold Schwarzenegger. Google his name and look for the before and after - the muscle turns to mounds of fat. Why? Because no one can keep up this level of fitness forever.

What's the answer?
Fitness is for life not just 90 days, pick a bunch of fitness activities that you can participate in for life.
Leaving the p90x type programs for all those people that are looking for momentary Schwarzenegger like results then the later results of fatness not fitness.

Most people need a real workout that they can start and work into a real life scenario - like walking. You won't get you a six pack but will get you in shape and is exercise you can do for life.

Why should you believe this? We're not selling anything just communicating our results from over 15 years of walking and maintaining a healthy weight. The best part it's free and right outside their front door. All they have to do is start and build a foundation that will last forever.

Do you even have to P90X workouts? Have you even seen the P90X nutrition plan? I must respectfully say that both can be implemented and mixed and matched for life. You can add to it, or just tweak it to maintain. There are many many options. P90X has put me in the best shape of my life and I still use it a year and a half later. I don't think people realize that you can modify the moves to suit your fitness level but P90X is not for beginners. No one ever said it was.

If someone is new to working out I always recommend that they see a trainer for a couple of sessions to learn the proper form. You guys really need to understand that working out at home compliments what you are teaching them. Most of your clients probably already have gym equipment or workout videos at home. It's about getting people in shape by whatever means necessary. Beachbody has easier programs for those that want easy and extreme programs for those that want extreme.

Mike says "What happens when the real person slows down or stops P90X? Well what happens to any of us if we stop exercising. The key is to implement the fitness into your life. If you want to challenge yourself with P90X then do. I'm sure if someone comes to you and says they want to an Ironman you don't say "no you don't it's to hard". If someone wants to do P90X you should embrace it and tell them to bring it to the gym and you will do it with them.

Working out at home is a time saver. If I had to drive to and from your gym and workout it would definitely take longer then the time it takes to do P90X.

I do agree with you Mike when you say fitness if for life and to pick a bunch of activities I can do for life. For me and over a million others, P90X is one of them. So is running, baseball, basketball and beer pong.(lol)

Average people do P90X and get awesome results, that is why it is so popular.

This quote kind of bugs me "All it does is set you up to buy their back end products (like the pull up bar and supplements for their nutrition plan) or the next Info product." So are you guys saying you don't sell supplements or hoodies or The Lebert Equalizer or smoothies and shakes or perform better equipment, kettle bells, foam rollers, herbalife and more. With P90X you only need a pullup bar and some dumbbells or resistance bands.

In any event everyone is entitled to their opinion. That's why we live in the great U.S.A.

If someone comes to you guys and wants to do P90X I really feel you should embrace it and coach them through it and not discourage them. You will retain more clients if you are flexible. Think outside the box. What happens when some of your current clients decide they can't afford the gym any more and want to workout at home. Do you just lose them? Recommend a home workout? Maybe cut them down to 1 day a week and recommend P90X? Your selling herbalife so I know you understand the power of residual income.

What a great high level dicussion. I enjoy reading all the tips and responses. I was going to buy the program, but I feel I could not sustain it and in fear of short term gains only. Thanks for the posting Todd and thanks for some interesting comments. I learned so much from Todd and from some of the feedback. I have not even met Todd or any of those that have made comments. Thanks again from Sparks, NV (Former Hope Vslley). I wish there was more Todd's out here on the West and more dicussion about heatlhy lifestyles! It's better than talking about how to recover from open heart surgury which I also had to have. Randy H.

I am a 51 year old male who has bought the program and can see why you are not
totally sold on the program. I can see the issue with having 30 minutes per day to
do the routine but I must be honest I said the same but had to be honest with myself
and cut out an additional 30 minutes of TV. I do walk around sore but not to the
point I was during the first week. Muscle confusion will make you sore but taking
the right supplements will help. I for one did not get caught into the beachbody
suppliment sales pitch. I agree P90X could be short-term but one can make it long
term buy keeping up with the program. I skip Yoga and I go out and ride my bike for
an hour. I also did not buy into their diet program. I have created my own as if I
was going to eat this way for good. Therefore, I am not setting myself up for
failure. I am not losing weight but am losing inches. My resting pusle rate is now
in the low 50's from the mid 70's and a good portion of that is due to the bike and
Plyometrics which I for one like the routine. I get more done with this program in
one day than I did for 3 days at the gym. I no longer wait for equipment. Your
statement of the progression is way too fast is true that is why someone should do
the lean program not the classic to start and then they need to motify the lean. My
body has been transforming and I can see the results. P90X is not for the faint at
heart and is designed for people who want to excel in their fitness routine. The
program is to get cut and muscular, not for the average Joe. That is why it is "x"
for extreme. Good article on your part.

You comment on it not being for the "40 year old father" made me chuckle. Since I'm a 41-year old father who kept breaking his New Year's resolutions and couldn't get himself to commit to a fitness program. It was because I was a father as well that making the time for the gym didn't work.

I'm not on week 5 of P90X and feel better than I have in 10 years. I'm not a coach and make no money from Beachbody. I just found this simple do-at-home program provided the motivation to keep going. I suspect a 'real coach' would be better - but I can't afford that. I find the hour I spend exercising with P90X is very focused and gives me much more variety than when I used to wander around the gym after being on the treadmill 20 minutes trying different machines.

I feel great, and I feel it's kicked me into action. There's nothing magic, or new about P90X - just a well thought out program that helps get average people off the couch and into shape.
